Vertical lines on MacBook Air display

Hi,

I have an Mid 2011 13 inch MacBook Air (MC965D/A) running OS X 10.10.5. Last week it was working normally (like it did the last four years), when I closed the lid. After about 15 minutes I opened it again and there were colored vertical lines on the display (see attached images). They appear from time to time and disappear again. Also they move when I move the mouse.

On an external monitor the lines are not visible. I already tried to reset the NVRAM (or PRAM?) and SMC. Both did not resolve the problem. My thought was that the problem is caused by a faulty display cable. But the lines change without touching the laptop. Also, bending or moving the display does not help. So a faulty cable might not be the cause.

Any thoughts?
